Joe Hisaishi Live - Studio Ghibli Concert 2008 Album

Joe HisaishiOn August 4 and August 5 2008, Tokyo's Nippon Budokan complex hosted a concert program of music pieces created by Studio Ghibli's Joe Hisaishi for the 9 films directed by Hayao Miyazaki. Hisaishi was accompanied by a 200-piece orchestra and 400 chorus singers. The event, titled "Ponyo on the Cliff by the Sea Movie Opening Commemoration" also commemorated 25 years of cooperation between Miyazaki and Hisaishi. The two began working together in 1983, when Hisaishi wrote the music for the Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind movie image album. Hisaishi went on compose the scores of every one of the full-length films that Miyazaki directed since then, and pieces from all of them were featured during the concert. (source)

A live CD of the event hasn't been released yet, but I have the unofficial Live Album of the concert, and I can tell, it's something you don't want to miss! Hisaishi is literally a god among anime composers and in general film composers... And it's the first time he has done a concert of this magnitude, with all his greatest Ghibli songs... If you enjoy Miyazaki's masterpieces, then you will probably enjoy this Live Album as well!!

10/10 I'll only do a short review of the concert, since I'll be releasing the video of the whole concert in a few days (or weeks...). Be sure to register here at the forums to download it before everyone else!! Anyway, back to the mega-uber-awesome Joe Hisaishi concert... I was moved to tears while watching it! All the most beautiful songs from every Miyazaki movie in one concert!! It was just too much for me! I couldn't help myself but cry... Especially because during each segment, they showed excerpts of the movies, which I think was really touching. All the songs sound even better and amazing than on the original OSTs! There are a lot of new arrangements, but most of all, it's just incredible to listen to 200 musicians and 400 singers (and Guest singers as well) at the same time. The effect is just magical!

Check out the first segment of the concert, the Nausicaa songs. You'll get an idea:
